How Do I Use Spotlight Search

Spotlight search is a great way to search your Mac, but it can also act as a dictionary or calculator. 

​

Two ways to open the Spotlight serach box:

​

     1. Click on the magnifying-glass icon in the menu bar.

​

     2. Press command + space bar- This is a great shortcut to remember!

​

To clear the search bar hit escape. Hitting escape twice will close the search bar. 

​

Search Your Mac

Spotlight search will search files, programs, emails, contacts, and calendar events. The spotlight search window is divided in half. The search results appear on the left and a preview on the right. 

You can open an app or a document by double clicking on it or pressing return. You can also drag things out of the results to the desktop. 

​

Calculations and Conversions

You can open the Spotlight search bar to complete calculations.

You can convert time, temperature, weight, lenghth, volume, and currency by typing in the amount you want to convert.

How do I use Split Screen Mode?

Split screen mode will allow you to keep two apps visable at the same time. This is helpful if you want to work in one app while viewing another such as twitter or mail. Split screen does not work in all apps. It is available if you see the double-arrow logo inside the green button in the upper left corner of the window.

1. Click and hold the green button located at the top left corner of the window. One half of your screen becomes shaded blue.

2. Release the trackpad. When you release the trackpad, the window will only fill half of the screen. All other open windowns will now be seen as small screens. 

​

3. Select the window you want to fill the other half of the screen. 

​

4. Adjust the proportion occupied by each app by dragging the divider line.

How Do I Customize My Dock?

You can add and remove icons from your dock to customize it to fit your needs. To add an icon, simply drag the icon from either your launchpad or the finder menu to the dock. To remove an icon, you can drag it off of the dock and let go after you see the word remove appear or click with two fingers on the icon, select options and remove from dock.

How Do I Take A Screenshot?

Whole Screen

command + shift + 3

The screenshot will be saved to your desktop.

Specfic Area

command + shift + 4

Once the crosshair pointer appears drag it to cover what you would like to capture.

The screenshot will be saved to your desktop.

​

Window/Menu

command+shift+4

Once the crosshair pointer appears, hit the spacebar and the pointer will change to a camera.

Highlight the window/menu you would like to capture and click the trackpad.
