Take a risk. Three words that are being said over and over as teachers head back to school.

Model risk taking for your students.

Take a chance with something new.

Step outside of your comfort zone.

I agree with all of these statements and try to take daily risks by pushing myself to be open to new ideas and practices. However, we need to be careful that we aren't passing judgment on who is taking a risk and who isn't.

This journey isn't going to look the same for all of us. What is uncomfortable to me may be a common practice for you. Something you are struggling to understand may come easy to me. If we are all headed in the same direction it is okay if our paths are a little different. What is crucial, is a culture where we feel supported to take these risks and that is a responsibility we all share. Sometimes, myself included, we are too quick to think about who isn't staying current enough or who isn't trying enough new ideas. It isn't about who is taking the biggest step...it is about where we are headed.
